AI set to transform South Korea’s jobs market, research finds
As artificial intelligence continues to gain ground in most sectors worldwide, the technology is set to transform Korea’s labour market, according to new research by the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade.
The impact of AI is likely to increase demand for occupations that require higher levels of education such as humanities and social science research, legal specialists, corporate management, administrative, clerical and educational fields, the industrial policy think tank said in the report released on 12 August.
In contrast, it is likely to result in lower demand for roles that rely on manual skills — including jobs in manufacturing, agriculture, production, construction, mining, and textile and clothing production — as they can be replaced by AI-powered robots or machines, it added.
The research is based on the AI Occupational Exposure Index, which measures how occupations are impacted by AI.
“The impact of AI on jobs is expected to be different from job to job, and an accurate understanding of this is essential for effective policy planning and response,” the report’s authors noted.
“Different occupations differ in the nature of work and the necessary technical composition, so the degree of exposure to AI is different.”
To manage the transition, the report calls for South Korea’s social safety net to be strengthened for at-risk occupations — for example, by expanding unemployment benefits, reskilling and technical training and career counselling.
The authors also recommended the government develop a strategy to attract key AI talent from overseas.
“As the demand for highly complementary human resources with AI is expected to increase, specialised visas for AI professionals and global AI researchers are needed,” the report said.
